Today began with another early morning. We planned to leave Rock Gap Shelter at 6:30 to hike 3.7 miles to a road crossing to catch a shuttle into Franklin, NC. We didn't leave camp until closer to 7:00 but we hiked quickly and were at the road by 8:30. Thankfully there was no rain this morning (although it poured and stormed all through the night--very thankful for the shelter!), but putting on cold, wet clothes this morning was another test of willpower! The shuttle showed up about an hour later and we piled our smelly selves into the bus to go to town. The original plan was to resupply and get back on the trail today but we decided to stay for the night and dry out our gear. Ron Haven (trail angel, shuttle driver, commissioner...) shuttled a bunch of hikers around town so we visited an outfitter and a few grocery stores. Dinner was Mexican food...so delicious! I'm laundered and showered and most of my gear is dry. So nice! Tomorrow morning we are planning to catch a bus to a church where we will get a free AYCE breakfast! Yeah, town is amazing, but I'm looking forward to getting back on the trail. It is supposed to rain most of the week (and be cold at night!) but I'm hoping it won't be a total washout as was yesterday. I think with clean clothes and a full belly it will be easier to handle the foul weather...no pain, no rain, no Maine, right?
