We were on the road at 7:30 for another chilly morning ride. The desert heats up quickly and we stopped to take our jackets off before we were out of Carson City. We had 65 miles planned over an easy route through the valley, which begins our 200-some mile ride on US 50.
We had a short climb out of the city and then it was coasting through a couple of small towns and we made a quick stop at a convenience store for bathroom and snack breaks. We stopped for lunch at a pizza place in Silver Springs (we have all been craving pizza!) and refilled our water.
The desert is beautiful in its own way...stark dusty mountains and scrub brush were all we could see for miles. The road seemed to be endless as we could see probably 10 miles ahead of us.
There is almost no shade but we were able to find a lone tree on the side of the road and took a break there this afternoon. When we arrived in Fallon, the temperature was 99 degrees!...a dry heat that sucked the moisture out of our mouths and noses. I was sipping almost constantly from my hydration pack, choking down the first few ounces of hot water that had been sitting in the drinking tube. Water is so much of a commodity that I don't want to waste any!
We stopped at Walmart to resupply and are in a Super 8 tonight. It looks like the next few days will be camping so we are taking advantage of the available amenities. :)
